Dr KG is leading them to big success. Clean Sweep for chess team The Ottawa Hills Chess Team took 1st place in the league and finished the season with a clean sweep. This is the third year in a row the chess team has gone undefeated. Mission control do you copy? The 360-immersion room prepared 5th-grade science students from Mrs. Genzman’s class for their mission to Mars. Students toured our solar system aboard the virtual ISS and rode a virtual roller coaster on Mars. The class later traveled to the Challenger Learning Center in Oregon, Ohio. Friday Nights in Green Bear Nation The BCSN Gameday Tailgate was broadcast live from Ottawa Hills at the Sept. 8 game. TEDx & Aspen Institute Speaker and Moonshot Platform Founder, Yemi, Inspires OH Students Leveraging Partnerships to provide Transformative Experiences for our kids”…one of the 4 focus areas of our new Strategic Plan truly came alive last Friday for our students at the Junior/Senior High. Thanks to OH grad and forever Green Bear fan, Mr. Pete Kadens, we were able to welcome Yemi, an amazing motivational speaker known around the world who talked about the future of creativity! His story, and how he went from poverty to being one of the top 20 people currently being considered to travel to the moon, had our student body mesmerized! Read more here . Ottawa River Restoration This past week, the section of the Ottawa River that flows through the Village was cleaned up by the Environmental Eclipse Club. Led by teacher Paul Genzman, the club removed more than 1,000 pieces of trash and debris to help protect the watershed’s ecosystem. The group coordinates its efforts through the Village of Ottawa Hills and Partners for Clean Streams. Thursday morning all 5th grade students and teachers took part in the Ottawa River Restoration project by sampling the water, removing invasive species, and learning about the importance of the watershed. Science teacher Lianne Genzman then worked with students in the lab to see what organisms live in the river. Art aims to bring awareness to clean water and sanitation issues globally OHHS Art Club students are working in collaboration with art teacher extraordinaire” Ms. Caitlin Shawaker and are making toilets into amazing works of art! These concept designs are part of World Toilet Day, which aims to bring awareness to clean water and sanitation issues globally. JHHS teachers recognized with Governor’s Thomas Edison STEM Award The Ohio Academy of Science selected 48 Ohio schools and 615 teachers to receive The Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for their accomplishments during the 2022-2023 school year. Congratulations to our amazing STEM teachers! Music class incorporates Hispanic Heritage Month Music is so important to the overall student experience for our kids! No matter what, there is always something creative, cute and musically fun going on in Mrs. Manchur’s elementary music classroom. These awesome 1st graders learned a song called Zapatito Blanco” for Hispanic Heritage month and are playing the game that goes with it. The song is in Spanish and originated in Mexico. They are using it to review quarter and eighth note rhythms as well. How organisms found indicate water quality in the Ottawa River Green Bear 5th graders in Mrs Genzman’s science classes had a great time getting additional practice assessing the biological health of a waterway using macroinvertebrates prior to their water sampling right in our own backyard from the Ottawa River! Students rotated between two stations where they used a dichotomous key to identify unknown macroinvertebrate samples they may encounter and then sampling for macroinvertebrates in our "dry stream" and coming up with a water...
